David Abarca Obituary, Death – Riverside police are investigating the fatal shooting of 41-year-old David Abarca, who was gunned down while walking home from work on March 22. Authorities remain puzzled about the motive behind the seemingly random attack.

The incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. near Hole and Mitchell avenues and was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby business. The video shows Abarca walking when an unidentified man suddenly approaches from behind and fires multiple shots, killing him.

A Dedicated Employee and Father

Abarca had been a longtime employee at Rodrigo’s Mexican Grill, where he worked for nearly 25 years. He typically received a ride home after his shift but had stayed late that evening to help a coworker and decided to walk home.

He had made it about 30 minutes into his journey when the attack happened. His death has left his family, friends, and especially his 10-year-old son devastated.

Quick Arrest of the Suspect

Shortly after the shooting, authorities apprehended the suspected gunman, 23-year-old Andre Thomas. A key tip from a local resident helped lead officers to Thomas.

“We’re very thankful for a neighbor who saw someone running through their yard, appearing to ditch something—possibly a gun,” said Officer Ryan Railsback. “That tip allowed officers responding to the scene to locate and arrest him quickly.”

Police later recovered the firearm they believe was used in the attack.

No Known Motive

Despite the swift arrest, investigators are struggling to understand what led to the shooting. Thomas, who reportedly lives near the crime scene, does not have a history of violent offenses.

“He had a job, lived with family, and seemed to be living a normal life,” Railsback added. “We don’t know where this behavior came from.”

Thomas remains in custody on suspicion of murder with his bail set at $1 million.
