Dejuan Taylor Obituary, Death – Memphis Police have identified the second man who was killed in a recent shooting at Memphis Rox, a well-known rock climbing gym in the city. Authorities confirmed that Dejuan Taylor was the second victim in the tragic incident, which also claimed the life of Jarmond Johnson, a staff member at the gym.

The shooting took place around 4 p.m. on June 30. Although investigators have not yet shared what led to the deadly gunfire, the Memphis Police Department continues to look into the circumstances surrounding the case. So far, no official motive has been released.

In the aftermath of the incident, Memphis Rox issued a heartfelt statement expressing sorrow over the loss of Johnson, one of their valued employees. “Tonight, we lost one of our most beloved Memphis Rox team members to gun violence,” the organization said. In response to the tragedy, the gym announced it would be temporarily closing its doors starting Monday, June 30, to give staff and the community time to grieve and process the loss.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police arrested one man, identified as Farris Haley, in connection with the scene. According to MPD, Haley was found near the body of one of the deceased victims. While officers were trying to manage the situation, Haley allegedly broke free from police, grabbed a loaded firearm, and fled the area. During the escape, he reportedly tossed the weapon into a car.

Haley has since been charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence, as well as resisting official detention. Authorities have not said whether he is considered a suspect in the shooting itself or if he may have other connections to the case. His involvement remains under investigation.

In their announcement identifying Dejuan Taylor as the second victim, the Memphis Police Department extended condolences to the loved ones of both men. “We extend our deepest condolences to their families and all those affected,” MPD said in a public statement.

As the investigation moves forward, police are expected to continue gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to piece together what led to the deadly confrontation. The deaths of Taylor and Johnson have shaken the community, especially given the location of the shooting — a facility known not just for climbing but for its focus on outreach and community building.

The loss of two lives to gun violence at a place meant for positivity and togetherness has deeply affected many in Memphis. The community now waits for more answers as police work to understand exactly what happened and who may ultimately be held responsible.
