County authorities have identified one of the three people who lost their lives in a tragic accident at a Westwood supermarket in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that 42-year-old Deris Renjo was among those killed inside the market at the time of the incident.
The collision was reported at approximately 12:11 p.m. at the 99 Ranch Market located at 1350 South Westwood Boulevard, near the intersection with Rochester Avenue. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene following reports that a vehicle had entered the store.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a silver sedan was traveling southbound when it first struck a bicyclist about a block away from the market. The vehicle then continued onto the sidewalk and into the supermarket, coming to a stop inside the bakery area. Renjo and two other individuals — a 55-year-old man and a 30-year-old man — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials indicated that two of the victims were employees working in the bakery, while the third was a customer who had been inside the store at the time. Several others were injured during the incident. Four people were transported to nearby hospitals, including two men in critical condition and two others with moderate injuries. Two additional individuals — the driver of the vehicle and the bicyclist — were evaluated at the scene but declined further medical treatment.
Fire officials confirmed that all three individuals who died were inside the bakery area when the collision occurred. A large emergency response followed, with firefighters, paramedics, and police establishing a triage area outside the store to assist victims and coordinate care. Westwood Boulevard was temporarily closed as crews worked to secure the scene and aid those affected.
Inspectors from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety later assessed the damage to the supermarket. The building was temporarily restricted from use due to structural damage, though officials said there were no signs of instability.
Authorities interviewed the driver at the scene as part of the investigation. Law enforcement officials stated that the incident is being treated as a tragic accident and that there is no indication it was intentional. Investigators continue to review the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The loss of life has deeply affected the Westwood community, particularly employees and customers of the market who were present that day. Incidents like this serve as a sobering reminder of how quickly ordinary moments can turn into tragedy.
As the investigation continues, community members are being encouraged to keep the victims’ families, injured individuals, and first responders in their thoughts. Officials say additional information will be released if and when it becomes available.
