Didarul Islam Obituary, Death – An off-duty New York Police Department officer was among the four people killed in a tragic shooting that occurred on Monday in Midtown Manhattan. The officer, Didarul Islam, was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx and had served with the NYPD for three and a half years.
Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was also a father of two children, and his wife is currently pregnant. Despite being off duty at the time, he was working a private security job and was wearing a uniform, including a bulletproof vest, and carrying his service weapon when the shooting happened.
The NYPD issued a heartfelt statement mourning Islam’s death, describing him as someone who “represented the very best” of the department. The department emphasized that he was trying to protect others when his life was cut short. His commitment to duty and bravery reflected the highest standards of police service, they said.
During a press conference Sunday night, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch both paid tribute to Officer Islam. Mayor Adams highlighted Islam’s faith, service, and devotion to New York City, saying, “He loved this city… He believed in God and lived a godly life. He is the embodiment of what this city stands for.” Adams acknowledged the pain of losing someone who stood as a symbol of hope and dedication.
Commissioner Tisch echoed the mayor’s sentiments, noting that Officer Islam “did exactly what we ask of our officers.” She described him as someone who willingly placed himself in harm’s way to protect others and who made the ultimate sacrifice. “He was shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that symbolized his vow to protect this city,” she added.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the three other individuals who were killed in the incident—two men and one woman. In addition to those killed, a fifth victim was critically wounded and is currently receiving treatment at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and officials have not provided further details about the circumstances or possible motives. However, the incident has deeply shaken both the NYPD and the broader New York City community, especially given the loss of an officer who was not just a public servant, but a husband, father, and soon-to-be parent again.
The shooting has reignited conversations about the risks law enforcement officers face both on and off duty. For Officer Didarul Islam, a life dedicated to service ended in an act of violence while he was fulfilling his responsibilities even outside his regular assignment. His death is being mourned as a tremendous loss to both his family and the city he swore to protect.
