The crash involved a 2023 Ram 1500, driven by 83-year-old Dondal Knier from Hugoton, Kansas, and a 2005 Ford F150, driven by 17-year-old Tabitha Ward from Stratford, Texas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s crash log, Knier was traveling westbound on US-54 when he crossed the center line into the eastbound lane.

Ward, in an attempt to avoid a collision with the oncoming Ram, swerved, but the two vehicles collided head-on. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to ignite in flames. Tragically, both drivers were unable to escape and died at the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has not yet determined the reason Knier’s vehicle crossed the center line. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash to provide clarity on the circumstances leading to the accident.
