Dorothy Heaton Obituary, Death – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the identities of four individuals involved in a multi-vehicle crash last week in Hand County, which resulted in one fatality. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 14, about six miles east of Highmore at 346th Avenue, shortly after 10 a.m. Three motorcycles were traveling westbound when a Chevy pickup truck, driven by 45-year-old Adam Ray of Huron, crossed the centerline and entered the motorcycles’ lane, causing a collision.
The first motorcyclist, 78-year-old Marvyn Heaton of Redfield, was able to steer clear of the pickup and avoided any impact. The second motorcyclist, 77-year-old Dorothy Heaton, also of Redfield, was not so fortunate. She was struck head-on by the Chevy pickup, resulting in fatal injuries. The third motorcyclist, 70-year-old Sherrie Johnson of Tulare, avoided a direct collision by swerving into a ditch. Johnson suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and was reported to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Authorities reported that Marvyn Heaton sustained no injuries, while Dorothy Heaton tragically lost her life at the scene. The pickup driver, Adam Ray, was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash and sustained minor injuries. Safety equipment usage played a notable role in the outcomes: Johnson, who wore a helmet, survived with only minor injuries, whereas the Heatons were not wearing helmets, contributing to the severity of their injuries, particularly in Dorothy Heaton’s fatal case.
