Dov Broyde Obituary, Death – A 70-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a Smart Car while walking across a Brooklyn street on Monday night, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Avenue I in the Midwood neighborhood. Police say the driver of the vehicle, a 74-year-old man, was operating a 2016 Smart Car when he approached the intersection at East 5th Street. It was at that point that he struck the pedestrian, identified as Dov Broyde.
Broyde had been attempting to cross the street when the collision occurred. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported him to Maimonides Medical Center. Despite their efforts, Broyde succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital. Authorities noted that he was just one block from his residence at the time of the incident.
The driver of the Smart Car remained at the scene following the crash and was not physically harmed. Police did not immediately file any criminal charges, and no arrests have been made as of Wednesday.
The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is currently handling the case. Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances of the crash, including whether speed, lighting, visibility, or other factors played a role in the deadly encounter.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Broyde was using a designated crosswalk at the time or whether the driver was obeying all traffic signals. Police have not released information about whether any surveillance footage was available to aid in the investigation.
Neighbors in the area were saddened by the news of Broyde’s death. Those who knew him described him as a familiar face in the neighborhood, and the fact that the crash occurred so close to his home only added to the sense of tragedy.
The fatal incident adds to a concerning trend of pedestrian deaths in New York City, where vulnerable road users often face serious risks from traffic. Advocates for safer streets continue to push for better protections for pedestrians, including improved lighting, better signage, and stricter enforcement of speed limits.
Authorities urge all drivers to exercise caution, especially at night and in residential neighborhoods where pedestrians may be present. They also remind pedestrians to use crosswalks, stay alert, and be visible when crossing roadways.
As the investigation moves forward, officials will analyze any physical evidence from the scene, review witness statements, and consider whether further action or charges are warranted based on their findings.
For now, the family and community of Dov Broyde are left mourning a sudden and tragic loss. Further updates from the NYPD are expected as the investigation continues.
