McCartney and his wife, 87-year-old Marjorie McCartney, were killed instantly in the crash, which occurred at 10:50 a.m. in front of Paramount Senior Living, located along Chambersburg Road, also known as U.S. Route 30.
According to Pennsylvania State Police in Gettysburg, the incident unfolded when Edward McCartney, who was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu with his wife as a passenger, stopped at a stop sign near the entrance of the senior living facility. After pausing, McCartney attempted to make a left-hand turn onto the busy Chambersburg Road. At that moment, a large commercial truck was approaching from the west.
The truck, a 2020 Western Star 4900 operated by 47-year-old Joshua T. Rohm, also a resident of Fayetteville, was heading westbound on Chambersburg Road. Investigators said Rohm was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. The truck struck the McCartneys’ vehicle, causing fatal injuries to both Edward and Marjorie. Despite the quick response of emergency crews, the couple was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rohm, the truck driver, sustained what officials described as suspected minor injuries. He was transported to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, for treatment. Police have not indicated that drugs, alcohol, or reckless driving played a role in the crash, though the investigation into the circumstances is still ongoing.
