Eljak Menjwak Obituary, Death – Vermont State Police have released the identity of a young man who drowned in the New Haven River over the weekend. The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Eljak Menjwak of Burlington.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Saturday just after 5 p.m. at Bartlett Falls, located off Lincoln Road in the town of Bristol. Menjwak reportedly jumped into the river from the popular waterfall spot but immediately began struggling once he hit the water. Witnesses at the scene said he appeared to have difficulty swimming almost as soon as he landed in the river.
Despite efforts by bystanders to assist, they were unable to pull him out of the water before emergency personnel arrived. Emergency responders were dispatched and worked to locate Menjwak. His body was ultimately recovered from the river around 8 p.m., nearly three hours after he first went under. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the recovery, Menjwak’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.
