Ernesto Chavez Obituary, Death Cause – Authorities in Sandusky County are investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Fremont man and left a young passenger injured. The incident occurred Tuesday, August 27, at approximately 4:36 p.m. along U.S. Route 20, just west of Ohio State Route 51 in Washington Township.
According to information provided by the Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2013 blue Nissan Versa driven by 44-year-old Ernesto Chavez, a resident of Fremont. Chavez had been traveling eastbound on U.S. 20 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the median and veered off the north side of the roadway.
After leaving the highway, the car collided with a mailbox before striking a barn. The impact left the vehicle heavily damaged and brought it to a final stop nearby. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Chavez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash site.
Traveling with Chavez was his 10-year-old rear-seat passenger. The child suffered serious injuries in the crash and was quickly transported to Mercy Health Saint Vincent Medical Center for treatment. Hospital officials later reported that the boy was in stable condition, giving some relief to family members and the community as they awaited updates on his recovery.
Officials confirmed that both Chavez and the young passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, a factor that may have helped reduce the severity of the child’s injuries. Nonetheless, the violent nature of the crash proved fatal for Chavez, underscoring the dangers drivers face even when safety measures are in use.
