Michael Duarte, a well-known food and barbecue content creator who shared his work online under the name “FoodWithBearHands,” died on Nov. 8 after being shot by deputies from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. Duarte was 36 years old. According to Medina County officials, deputies were called to the 1500 block of Houston Street in Castroville in response to a report of a man acting erratically and carrying a knife.
Deputies say Duarte was reportedly threatening both responders and others at the scene. A press release from the sheriff’s office stated that Duarte made verbal threats and allegedly attempted to assault Fire and EMS personnel who were on site when the deputy arrived.
