Glennewyn Johnson Obituary, Death – A deadly collision on an icy stretch of Interstate 27 in Swisher County left one person dead and three others injured early Wednesday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around 1:10 a.m., approximately two miles north of Tulia. A 2005 Mercedes C240 was traveling south in the right lane when it crossed an overpass covered in black ice. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to spin and come to a stop facing the wrong direction in the southbound lane.

Behind the Mercedes, a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia towing a semi-trailer was also heading south. As the Mercedes’ driver attempted to turn the car back around, the semi came over the overpass and struck the vehicle head-on. DPS reported that both drivers tried to avoid the crash by steering onto the shoulder, but a collision was unavoidable.

One of the Mercedes’ passengers, 34-year-old Glennewyn Johnson of Happy, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver, 37-year-old Christopher Moreno, also from Happy, was transported to Swisher County Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, 29-year-old Quadre Brookins of Plainview, was taken to Plainview Covenant Hospital, also with non-life-threatening injuries.

The semi’s driver, a 61-year-old from Lubbock, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene before being released.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, with DPS urging drivers to use caution in icy conditions.
