J.W. Bode Obituary, Death – Late Sunday night, a deadly shooting at an Enid hospital claimed the life of a security officer, and authorities have now identified both the gunman and the victim. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), 46-year-old Dedrick Bloss was responsible for the attack at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center that left hospital security officer J.W. Bode dead. Bloss was later shot and killed by police after opening fire.

The sequence of events began just before 11 p.m. on Sunday, when Enid police responded to a domestic disturbance near East Walnut Avenue and North 12th Street, a location close to the hospital. Investigators later confirmed the disturbance took place at the home of Bloss’ ex-wife. While details remain unclear as to why he went to the hospital afterward, police quickly tracked his vehicle to the Integris facility.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Bloss reportedly opened fire. Public Safety Officer J.W. Bode, a 72-year-old grandfather working security, confronted the suspect in an effort to protect others. During the exchange, Bloss fatally shot Bode. Police officers at the scene then returned fire, killing Bloss and bringing the immediate danger to an end.

Hospital officials released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of Bode and recognizing his bravery. “It is with great sadness that we share that one of the individuals killed in the overnight shooting at our Enid hospital was one of our own,” Integris Health said. “Public Safety Officer J.W. Bode was killed as he bravely approached the suspect. He died protecting others. Our deepest condolences go out to his family. We are profoundly grateful to law enforcement for their swift and courageous response in securing the hospital and protecting our patients, caregivers, and community.”

The hospital emphasized that Bode’s actions saved lives and described him as a hero whose sacrifice will not be forgotten. To support hospital staff affected by the tragedy, Integris Health has made counseling and chaplain services available.

While OSBI continues to investigate, the community has already begun to reflect on the tragedy and remember Bode for his service. Friends, colleagues, and family members described him as a devoted grandfather and dedicated officer who placed the safety of others above his own. His death has not only shaken the hospital staff but has also deeply impacted the wider Enid community.

As for Bloss, investigators are still working to piece together what led him to the hospital following the domestic incident. The motive remains unclear, and officials have not released further details about the earlier disturbance involving his ex-wife.

The shooting underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement and security officers in unpredictable situations. Bode’s death serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who step forward in moments of crisis to shield others from harm.

For now, the community grieves the loss of Officer J.W. Bode, a man remembered for his bravery, dedication, and selfless service. Authorities will continue investigating to provide answers about what drove Bloss to carry out the tragic attack.
