Jackson Paul Jones Obituary, Death – The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the Florence man killed in an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday. The individual has been identified as 33-year-old Jackson Paul Jones. The incident involved a Florence police officer, and at the request of Florence Police Chief Mike Holt, the sheriff’s office is overseeing the investigation.

According to the sheriff’s office, the situation began around 5:30 p.m. when a 911 call was made by a man claiming to be in the parking lot of the Florence Police Department, stating that he was “about to shoot the place up.” In response, officers were dispatched to the location and encountered Jones in the rear parking lot of the department.

Jones exited his vehicle armed with a handgun and began firing shots. One of the responding officers returned fire, hitting Jones. Despite efforts by officers, Fire, and EMS units to provide life-saving measures, Jones succumbed to his injuries on the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident.

Following the shooting, investigators from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office arrived to process the scene. They collected a handgun, a cell phone, and Jones’ vehicle for further examination. Jones’ body was sent to state forensics for an autopsy and toxicology testing to gather more details about the incident.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office plans to interview the officers involved, review body camera footage, and examine surveillance video from the police department building. They will also scrutinize the contents of the cell phone and the vehicle. The results of the investigation will eventually be presented to a Lauderdale County Grand Jury for review. At present, no additional information has been released regarding the case.
