Jason Arnold Cause Of Death – The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place late Sunday night, June 22, in Lewes. Authorities were initially called around 11 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on 49-year-old Jason Arnold. The call came from the 32000 block of Cea Dag Circle, near Dagsboro, where it was reported that Arnold was armed and had made threats to harm both himself and his family.
While troopers were en route, they learned that Arnold had left the area and was believed to be driving a black Honda Pilot. He was reportedly heading toward a residence on Blackwood Drive in Lewes, where family members lived. A Millsboro police officer located a vehicle matching the description and attempted a traffic stop. Arnold did not comply, leading to a police pursuit with assistance from a state trooper.
The chase ended on Blackwood Drive. Police say Arnold exited the vehicle with a firearm and began firing at officers. Both the Millsboro officer and the trooper returned fire. During the exchange, Arnold was struck but managed to flee into the family home on the same street.
Following this, members of the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team and Crisis Management Team arrived on the scene and attempted for several hours to convince Arnold to surrender peacefully. When efforts to negotiate failed, law enforcement entered the residence and found Arnold deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family was notified.
During the incident, a 69-year-old woman in a nearby home suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether her injuries were caused by the crossfire or another aspect of the incident. She was treated at a local hospital and later released. No other injuries were reported among officers or civilians.
In accordance with Delaware State Police policy, the trooper involved has been placed on administrative leave while a use-of-force investigation is conducted in partnership with the Delaware Department of Justice. Similarly, the Millsboro officer involved will undergo a review based on his department’s internal procedures.
The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are working to understand the full sequence of events, including the cause of the initial threats and the exact timeline of the shooting and standoff.
