Jaylen Reed Obituary, Death – A 31-year-old man lost his life in a car crash that occurred during a police pursuit in Tuscaloosa. Authorities have identified the deceased as Jaylen Reed, a resident of Aliceville.
The incident began around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening when an officer from the Tuscaloosa Police Department attempted to pull over a driver on Cousette Street near the Interstate 359 overpass. The officer had reportedly observed the vehicle committing several traffic violations. When the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, the driver—later confirmed to be Reed—refused to comply and sped away.
According to Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit, Reed fled at a very high speed, maneuvering through multiple intersections. As the chase continued, he lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed into a ditch and culvert near Tamko Building Products.
Emergency responders arrived to find Reed unresponsive. Immediate medical aid was administered at the scene, and Reed was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no bystanders were harmed. Capt. Kennedy emphasized that from the moment the police patrol car activated its emergency lights to the time of the crash, the entire pursuit lasted less than 30 seconds.
In the aftermath of the crash, investigators discovered that Reed had several active felony warrants against him at the time of the incident. This could have influenced his decision to flee from police rather than comply with the attempted traffic stop.
As the crash involved a Tuscaloosa Police Department officer, standard protocol required an external investigation to ensure impartiality. The Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit, which operates independently from the police department, was assigned to lead the investigation. They are being assisted by the Northport Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.
Authorities also noted that they have gathered video footage and spoken to multiple witnesses in connection with the crash. These pieces of evidence are expected to help clarify the sequence of events and whether proper procedures were followed during the brief pursuit.
Officials have not yet released any additional details about the nature of the felony warrants or whether any additional law enforcement action is being taken. For now, the investigation remains ongoing.
