Officials said that a black 2019 Toyota Tundra, driven by an 80-year-old Murphysboro man, was traveling south on Highway 13, approaching the Union Pacific Railroad underpass, when the incident occurred.
At the same time, a pedestrian, later identified as 50-year-old Jennifer Perez, also from Murphysboro, was walking north in the southbound lane of the highway. Authorities stated that as the vehicle neared the underpass, the driver attempted to steer away to avoid a collision but was unable to do so in time.
An off-duty deputy from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office happened to be nearby and was the first to arrive at the location. He immediately reported the situation and stayed to assist. Another passing driver also stopped to help, and both individuals provided aid to Jennifer Perez while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
