Authorities have identified the two truck drivers who died following a major crash involving multiple vehicles on Highway 12 in Attala County.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the collision occurred Friday morning near the county line with Holmes County. Troopers responded to reports of a serious crash involving two commercial trucks and another vehicle.
Investigators say one of the trucks, which was hauling logs, was driven by 45-year-old John Hedges of Kilmichael. The second truck, which was transporting pipes, was driven by Raul Rosquete of Clearwater.
Preliminary findings from troopers indicate the log truck crossed the center line of the highway and collided with the other 18-wheeler traveling in the opposite direction. Authorities reported that both trucks caught fire following the collision.
Officials confirmed that both drivers died as a result of the crash.
Investigators also reported that a third vehicle later collided with the rear of one of the trucks involved in the crash. That vehicle also caught fire, but authorities said the driver—a woman—was able to exit the vehicle safely and was not injured.
Emergency crews remained at the scene for several hours as they worked to secure the area and clear the roadway. During that time, portions of Highway 12 were closed to traffic while officials conducted their investigation and removed the damaged vehicles.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances that led to the crash.
Serious collisions involving large commercial trucks can have significant impacts on highways and nearby communities. As officials review what happened in this case, many are asking an important question: what additional safety measures could help prevent major crashes on rural highways?
