According to preliminary findings from investigators, the pickup truck had been traveling northbound on Center Minot Hill Road when it unexpectedly crossed over the centerline into the path of oncoming traffic. At the same time, the minivan was moving southbound when it was struck head-on by the pickup. The force of the collision left the driver of the minivan critically injured.
The victim was later identified as 48-year-old Jonathan Spofford, a resident of Hebron. Despite the efforts of first responders, Spofford’s injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His passing has left the community in shock, as news of the crash spread quickly throughout the small Maine towns connected by the roadway.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as 39-year-old Dylan Conlon, of Norway, Maine. Authorities confirmed that Conlon did not sustain any injuries in the accident. Details about why his vehicle crossed into the opposing lane remain unclear, and officials have not yet determined whether impairment, distraction, or another factor played a role.
For nearly five hours after the crash, Center Minot Hill Road was closed between Marston Hill Road and Woodman Hill Road as deputies and crash reconstruction teams carried out a detailed on-scene investigation.
