Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating a serious crash that left one person dead and another critically injured early Sunday morning.

According to Montgomery County Police, the collision occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on March 15 near the intersection of Woodfield Road and Glendalough Road, just outside Gaithersburg. Officers and emergency responders were called to the scene after reports of a major crash involving two vehicles.

Investigators say 39-year-old Jorge Estuardo Moran Hernandez of Clarksburg was driving a Ford F-150 northbound on Woodfield Road when the pickup truck crossed into the opposite lane of traffic. Police said the vehicle then collided head-on with a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Authorities reported that the impact caused the pickup truck to leave the roadway. The vehicle then struck an embankment, rolled over, and hit a nearby guardrail before coming to a stop.

During the rollover, police said Moran Hernandez was partially ejected from the truck. Emergency responders arriving at the scene confirmed that he died there as a result of the crash.

The woman driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee survived the collision but suffered serious injuries. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and was reported to be in critical but stable condition, according to police.

Montgomery County Police said detectives from the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit are now leading the investigation into the incident. Their work typically involves examining vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and other evidence to better understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Officials noted that investigations of this nature can take time. Authorities said the process of reconstructing the collision and determining contributing factors may take several weeks or even months to complete.

Head-on collisions are among the most serious types of roadway accidents due to the combined speed and force involved when vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide. Safety officials often stress the importance of staying alert while driving, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility and fatigue can sometimes become factors.

Community members in the area say the road where the crash occurred is frequently traveled by both local residents and commuters. Incidents like this often prompt renewed discussions about roadway safety and driver awareness.
