ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. —  St. Joseph County authorities have released the identity of the man who tragically lost his life in a rollover accident late Saturday night. The victim was identified as Joseph Rush, a 40-year-old resident of Starke County.

According to the St. Joseph County Police Department, the incident occurred shortly around midnight near the intersection of Kern and Fir Roads. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a serious single-vehicle crash. When officers and first responders arrived, they discovered the vehicle engulfed in flames, with Rush still trapped inside.

The situation was further complicated by live power lines that had fallen onto the vehicle as a result of the crash. These downed electrical lines created an extremely hazardous environment, preventing emergency personnel from immediately reaching the driver or attempting a rescue. Firefighters, medics, and law enforcement officials had no choice but to wait until crews from AEP (American Electric Power) arrived to secure the area and make it safe to approach.

Once the power company confirmed that the electrical danger had been neutralized, first responders were finally able to access the vehicle. Sadly, by that time, Rush had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the rollover. The exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, including whether speed, roadway conditions, or a possible mechanical failure may have played a role. Officials have not indicated the presence of any other vehicles, and the incident is currently being treated as a single-vehicle accident.

Police noted that accidents involving live power lines are particularly dangerous, not only for victims but also for emergency crews. Contact with active electrical wires can lead to severe injury or death, which is why crews were required to wait before approaching the burning car. The delay, while necessary for safety, unfortunately meant that Rush could not be rescued in time.

The St. Joseph County Police Department, along with investigators from other supporting agencies, continues to review evidence from the scene. Additional details may be released once the investigation progresses further. For now, officials have only confirmed Rush’s identity and acknowledged the tragic circumstances surrounding his death.

This accident marks yet another reminder of the unpredictability of roadway incidents and the added dangers when other hazards—such as power lines—are involved. The community of Starke County, where Rush lived, is left mourning the sudden loss of a local resident.

As the investigation moves forward, authorities are urging motorists to always drive with caution, especially at night when visibility is lower and conditions can be more challenging. While the cause of the crash remains undetermined, law enforcement hopes to provide more clarity in the coming days once more information is available.

For now, the focus remains on honoring the life of Joseph Rush and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the fatal rollover are fully understood.
