Authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Tuesday evening at the intersection of Grand Village Boulevard and Town Park Drive in Conroe.
According to the Conroe Police Department, officers responded just after 5 p.m. on February 17 to reports of a collision involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was identified as 72-year-old Kate Autry.
Police said the driver of the pickup truck and several bystanders immediately began providing life-saving assistance before first responders arrived. The Conroe Fire Department and EMS personnel took over medical care upon reaching the scene. Despite those efforts, Autry was pronounced deceased at the location.
Authorities confirmed that both the driver and the victim were residents of the Grand Central Park community. At this time, investigators have not indicated that excessive speed or reckless disregard for traffic control devices contributed to the crash.
Detectives are reviewing all available evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. Police stated that glare from the low western sun at the time of the incident is being evaluated as a possible contributing factor.
The Conroe Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional information may be released as it becomes available.
Officials are reminding motorists to remain attentive, particularly during late afternoon and early evening hours when sunlight conditions can impact visibility. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution near intersections and crosswalks, and pedestrians are urged to remain alert when crossing roadways.
Authorities expressed their condolences to those affected by the incident and continue to ask the community for patience as investigators complete their review.
