Kimberly Lannigan Death News – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has identified the driver involved in the tragic wrong-way crash that claimed the life of Navasota Police Department’s Sergeant Mark Butler last Wednesday. The suspect is Kimberly Lannigan, a 59-year-old from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The sequence of events began when College Station police tried to stop Lannigan after she attempted to use a fake ID to cash a fraudulent check at a bank on Rock Prairie Road. When officers approached her vehicle, she fled south on Highway 6, prompting a pursuit involving both College Station police and DPS troopers. The chase took a dangerous turn when Lannigan reached the Millican exit, where she made a U-turn and began driving north in the southbound lanes, heading in the wrong direction.

Lannigan continued driving the wrong way for about a mile and a half before colliding head-on with Sgt. Mark Butler’s vehicle. The impact of the crash was fatal for both parties involved. Lannigan was pronounced dead at the scene, while Sgt. Butler was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Navasota community is now mourning the loss of Sgt. Butler, a respected officer whose dedication to public service was evident throughout his career. Plans have been made to honor his memory. A public visitation is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, at the Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota. The following day, a funeral service will take place at Central Church in Bryan-College Station, with a private burial ceremony to follow.

This tragic event highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face every day while performing their duties. Sgt. Butler’s death is a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-speed pursuits and the potential consequences of reckless driving. As the investigation into the crash continues, the community will gather to pay their respects and support Sgt. Butler’s family during this difficult time.
