Lamar was critically injured when a large branch suddenly broke off from a tree and landed on a group of children sitting beneath it.
Emergency services responded quickly, and Lamar was transported to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. The medical examiner reported that the cause of death was blunt force trauma due to crushing injuries sustained from the falling branch.
In addition to Lamar, four other children were hurt in the incident. Two of them sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized as a precaution. One of the injured, a young girl, was airlifted from the scene to receive medical treatment. Fortunately, she is expected to make a full recovery.
The group of campers had been seated beneath the tree when the branch unexpectedly gave way. The camp, called Camp Wildcraft, is designed for young children with a focus on exploring and enjoying the outdoors. This year’s session was in its fourth week when the tragedy occurred.
Camp Wildcraft operates two campuses, one in Malibu and one in Calabasas. Due to concerns about wildfire recovery in Malibu, the program had shifted its summer operations back to the Calabasas location.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, which oversees King Gillette Ranch, released a public statement. “We are devastated by the tragic loss of a young child at a summer camp at King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains,” the statement read. “Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow. Our hearts are with the child’s family, friends, and all those affected by this unimaginable tragedy.”
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Grief counselors are expected to be made available for campers, staff, and families affected by the event.
