A teacher and coach at Veterans Memorial High School has died following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon while traveling, according to a statement released by the Corpus Christi Independent School District.

District officials confirmed that 28-year-old Leyton Hernandez passed away as a result of the accident. Authorities said the incident involved two vehicles, though further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash have not been publicly released.

Hernandez had been a teacher and multi-sport coach at Veterans Memorial High School for the past five years. During his time at the school, he worked closely with students both in the classroom and in athletics, helping guide and mentor young athletes across multiple sports programs.

In response to the loss, the school district announced that its crisis counseling team will be available to support students and staff when schools reopen on Monday. District leaders say the counseling services are intended to help the school community process the loss and provide emotional support during a difficult time.

Hernandez came from a well-known family in the local education community. He was the son of Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Roland Hernandez and Cynthia Hernandez. He was also the brother of Lauren Stinson.

According to the district, Hernandez graduated from King High School before continuing his education at Texas State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2020. During his earlier years, he was recognized as a talented high school athlete and later became a college football recruit.

Those who knew him say he carried his passion for athletics into his career in education, where he worked to inspire students and encourage teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. His role as a coach allowed him to build strong relationships with many students who looked to him for guidance and motivation.

School officials say Hernandez made a meaningful impact on the campus community and that his dedication to students will be remembered by colleagues, athletes, and families across the district.

The Hernandez family has asked for privacy as they mourn their loss. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

As the school community prepares to return to campus, many are reflecting on Hernandez’s contributions as a teacher, coach, and mentor who worked to shape the lives of young people in Corpus Christi.

How should schools and communities come together to remember educators who make such a lasting impact on their students?
