M.A. Gillick Obituary, Death – The Raleigh Police Department has released the identity of the officer who was shot while responding to a burglary call earlier this week. The officer is First Class Officer M.A. Gillick.

On Tuesday at around 5:30 p.m., police were called to a home on Democracy Street, near Chapanoke Road and South Wilmington Street in Raleigh. When officers arrived, a suspect began shooting at them. The officers returned fire, leading to a shootout. Officer Gillick was struck during the exchange, while the suspect, 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues, was fatally shot. Additionally, a victim at the scene, 73-year-old John Rowe, also lost his life during the incident.

Gillick, who joined the Raleigh Police Department in June 2022, is a U.S. Army veteran. He previously served as a captain in field artillery with the 82nd Airborne Division before transitioning to law enforcement following his honorable discharge.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson expressed gratitude for the community’s support, saying, “The outpouring of support to Officer Gillick and the entire RPD family from the community has been wonderful. Officer Gillick’s family has shown tremendous strength, composure, and resilience during this difficult time. The family asks for privacy as they continue to stand by Officer Gillick.”
