Authorities say a 16-year-old suspect will face adult charges following a fatal shooting earlier this month in Elkhart.
According to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office, the teenager, identified as Emerson Oviedo, has been formally charged with murder in connection with the death of 19-year-old Marco Antonio Lopez Terrazas Jr..
Investigators say the shooting occurred on March 2 in the 2600 block of Morton Avenue in Elkhart, Indiana. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area and found Terrazas suffering from a gunshot injury.
Authorities said emergency responders attempted life-saving efforts at the scene. However, Terrazas was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Following the investigation, prosecutors announced that Oviedo would be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult. Officials have not released additional details about what may have led to the incident as the case moves through the legal process.
Court records show that Oviedo is scheduled to appear for an initial hearing Tuesday morning, where the charges will be formally addressed and the next steps in the case will be determined.
Cases involving serious charges against minors often draw significant public attention because of the legal process that determines whether a juvenile will be tried in adult court. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting while the investigation and court proceedings continue.
