Maryland State Police are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday evening in Wicomico County. Authorities identified the driver as 18-year-old Matthew Garcia of Rockville. According to state police, Garcia was transported by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a regional trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two passengers were also injured in the crash. Police said one passenger was flown to a shock trauma center for treatment, while another was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Both remain hospitalized. Officials have not released additional details about their conditions.
Officers with the Fruitland Police Department responded to the scene around 8:41 p.m. after receiving reports of a single-car crash near South Division Street and Coulbourn Mill.
A preliminary investigation indicates the Honda Civic was traveling along South Division Street when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection. Authorities said the driver attempted to maneuver through the turn, continued westbound, and struck the top of a guardrail before the vehicle came to rest in Coulbourn Mill Pond.
Investigators believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and officials say conclusions will be based on a full review of the evidence.
Emergency crews worked at the scene for several hours. Roadways in the area were closed for more than four hours to allow investigators to document the crash and ensure the area was safe. Troopers from the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack and officers from the Fruitland Police Department assisted with the response.
At the request of the Fruitland Police Department, the Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the active investigation. The specialized unit reviews serious and fatal crashes to determine contributing factors and help provide clarity to families and the community.
Authorities have not indicated that any other vehicles were involved. Officials are continuing to gather information, including examining roadway conditions, vehicle data, and other relevant evidence.
Community members are reminded that investigations of this nature can take time. Law enforcement agencies stress the importance of patience as they work to determine exactly what happened.
This tragic incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of roadway safety. Police encourage drivers to obey posted traffic signs, follow speed limits, and remain alert behind the wheel at all times.
Authorities have expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Matthew Garcia during this difficult time. They also ask the public to respect the privacy of those affected as the investigation continues.
Updates will be shared by Maryland State Police as more information becomes available through official channels.
