Michael C. Freeland, 48, of Falls Church, Virginia, was identified as the deceased. The incident occurred around 7:58 p.m. when Freeland was aiding the driver of an Audi whose vehicle had broken down on the right shoulder of I-95. According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), a Chrysler driver lost control and crossed all lanes of traffic, striking both Freeland and the Audi driver. Freeland sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The Audi driver was seriously injured but, fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.
VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol provides free roadside assistance to drivers in need, including help with disabled vehicles, minor repairs, and emergency situations, as outlined on the VDOT website. Freeland was performing his duties as part of this program when the fatal crash occurred.
