Michael Duncan Obituary, Death – The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has released further information regarding a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday night in Delaware County. The investigation is ongoing into the incident, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries on Interstate 71 in Berkshire Township, near the Tanger Outlets and the U.S.-36/State Route 37 exit.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. when Michael Duncan, a 35-year-old driving a black Hyundai Tucson, lost control of his vehicle while traveling north on I-71. The Hyundai veered across the median, overturned, struck the median cable barrier, and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado in the southbound lanes. After the impact, the Hyundai ended up in the middle of the southbound lanes, while the Chevrolet slid off the left side of the highway.
Michael Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the Hyundai—a 38-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl—sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. The driver and a passenger of the Chevrolet Silverado were also seriously injured and hospitalized.
Additionally, a Toyota Tacoma, which was traveling southbound, was hit by debris from the crash. The driver and passenger of the Tacoma were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The OSHP noted that Duncan was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while all other individuals involved were properly restrained. The southbound lanes of I-71 were closed for about three hours following the incident.
Multiple agencies assisted in responding to the crash, including the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware Fire & EMS, BST&G Fire and EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The exact cause of why Duncan lost control of the Hyundai is still under investigation. Authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine what may have led to the tragic accident.
