The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Floral and Willow avenues, west of Selma, around 8:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP reports that 24-year-old Saul Galvez Diaz was traveling east on Floral Avenue when he crossed the center line while attempting to make a left turn. This maneuver caused a head-on collision with a westbound Nissan. In the vehicle driven by Diaz, 28-year-old Michelle Lawrence of Fresno, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was seated in the front passenger seat. She was severely injured and, despite being rushed to a local hospital, was pronounced dead.

A nine-year-old girl, who was seated behind Lawrence, also suffered significant injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigators stated that Diaz, the driver of the vehicle that caused the crash, sustained moderate injuries and was later found to be under the influence of alcohol. Upon his release from the hospital, Diaz will be arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

In the Nissan, the driver and front passenger also sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital for medical care. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.

The CHP has launched an ongoing investigation into the crash, and further details are expected as they continue to gather evidence and witness accounts. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Michelle Lawrence, and the investigation focuses on the impact of impaired driving on road safety.
