Miles Dignean Obituary, Death – The New York State Attorney General’s Office has publicly identified the man who was fatally shot by an Oswego County Sheriff’s Deputy on March 21. According to Attorney General Letitia James, the deceased individual was Miles Dignean. The shooting took place at a residence located at 34 Cook Road in the Town of Constantia.
Authorities reported that Oswego County Deputies, along with New York State Police, arrived at the address around noon on March 21. Their response followed a 911 call requesting a welfare check and an attempt to serve Dignean with an order of protection.
During their interaction with Dignean, a physical altercation ensued. Officials from both the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office stated that Dignean wielded a metal object, striking a State Trooper in the head. The trooper sustained minor injuries and was subsequently transported to a hospital in Syracuse for medical treatment.
As the confrontation escalated, an Oswego County Deputy discharged their firearm, striking Dignean. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 p.m. that same day.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a handwritten sign was spotted near the road where the incident occurred. The sign, written in red lettering, read, “The cops just killed my son.”
The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has since launched an inquiry into the shooting. Under state law, the office is required to investigate any incident in which a civilian dies as a result of law enforcement actions.
As this remains an active case, authorities have not disclosed further details, and the investigation is ongoing.
