The Hampton Police Division reported that officers were dispatched to the Quality Inn located in the 2100 block of West Mercury Boulevard shortly after midnight—around 12:09 a.m.—in response to calls about gunfire in the area. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found both a man and a woman with serious gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders from Hampton Fire and Rescue transported the two victims to a local hospital for treatment. A few hours later, at around 2:20 a.m., authorities confirmed that the female victim had died as a result of her injuries.
On Thursday, Corporal Shaun Stalnaker provided an update, identifying the woman as 24-year-old Monica Rodriguez, a resident of Newport News. At this time, police have not released any new information regarding the condition of the male victim who was also injured in the shooting.
According to investigators, the shooting occurred as the two victims were walking toward their hotel room. An unidentified individual approached them, and after a brief verbal interaction, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot both victims. The assailant then fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.
