A fatal crash involving two pickup trucks occurred in Wayne County, eastern Indiana, over the weekend, resulting in the death of a woman and serious injuries to a man. The accident took place around 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, at the intersection of South U.S. Highway 27 and State Route 122, about seven miles south of Richmond. Responding emergency personnel found a Chevy pickup and a Dodge pickup in a field southwest of the intersection.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office identified the passenger of the Chevy as Nannie Byrd, a 60-year-old woman from Manchester, Kentucky. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Chevy’s driver, a 68-year-old man, also from Manchester, sustained significant injuries and was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
The Dodge truck carried two juveniles who suffered minor injuries and were transported to Reid Health hospital in Richmond for treatment.
According to the initial investigation, the Chevy was traveling south on U.S. Highway 27, while the Dodge was heading west on State Route 122. Authorities reported that the Dodge failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to the Chevy colliding with its passenger side. The impact sent both vehicles into the nearby field.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing as authorities work to gather more details.
