Nathaniel Bailey Obituary, Death – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released the names of the individuals involved in a deadly incident that took place Tuesday in Albert Lea. Authorities have confirmed the identities of both the man and woman who died in the incident, as well as the law enforcement officers who were involved in the use of deadly force.
According to the BCA’s initial findings, the situation began when officers were called to a rural home in Albert Lea on Tuesday evening. The call was prompted by a report that a man had texted a woman claiming he had just killed his mother.
The man was later identified as 44-year-old Nathaniel Bailey of Albert Lea. After the report, law enforcement learned Bailey had left the residence in a vehicle. Officers located the car near Austin in Mower County and attempted a traffic stop. However, Bailey fled from authorities and eventually returned to the original home in Albert Lea.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Bailey exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. Officers fired their weapons at him, striking Bailey. Despite efforts to provide medical care, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A search of the property later uncovered the body of 66-year-old Brenda Krause, also of Albert Lea. Investigators determined she had died from gunshot wounds. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death and ruled her manner of death as a homicide.
Bailey also died from gunshot wounds, consistent with being shot by officers during the armed confrontation.
Five law enforcement officers were identified as being directly involved in the incident. All of them have been placed on critical incident leave, as is standard procedure in shootings involving officers. The officers identified are:
- Sergeant Katlynne Fisher from the Mower County Sheriff’s Office
- Deputy Sean Robbins of the Steele County Sheriff’s Office
- Deputy Darik Weigel from the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office
- Detective Sy Vanthavong of the Albert Lea Police Department
- A fifth officer from the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office, whose name has not been disclosed due to their undercover status
The BCA is continuing its investigation into the sequence of events, including what led to the initial report, Bailey’s confrontation with police, and the deaths of both individuals. Additional details may be released as the inquiry progresses.
The incident has left the Albert Lea community in shock, as the situation escalated quickly and involved a tragic loss of life. Law enforcement agencies are cooperating fully with the BCA during the investigation, and further findings will be made available once the investigation concludes.
