Nicholas J. Kupec Obituary, Death – A Waterford man was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95 in Westbrook Friday morning after a truck lost part of its load, triggering a chain reaction of crashes, police confirmed. The crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. near Exit 64 on I-95 North. According to Connecticut State Police, a truck hauling a trailer filled with plywood lost its load, scattering the boards across the highway. Some of the debris spilled into the southbound lanes, creating a sudden and dangerous obstacle for oncoming vehicles.
The falling plywood set off a series of collisions involving four additional vehicles. Police reported that the drivers lost control and slammed into each other, as well as into roadside structures. Several of the vehicles struck the guardrail on the right shoulder, while others hit the concrete barrier dividing the highway.
Among those caught in the crash was 39-year-old Nicholas J. Kupec of Waterford. Emergency responders rushed him to Yale-New Haven Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead. His death marks the only fatality in the accident.
Three other drivers involved in the pileup were transported to Middlesex Health Shoreline Medical Center with injuries. Fortunately, police described those injuries as minor, and the individuals are expected to recover.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the trailer losing its load of plywood. It remains unclear whether improper loading, mechanical failure, or other factors played a role. Troopers are reviewing evidence from the scene and asking for assistance from the public.
