Officials in Macomb County have released the identity of the man who died after an encounter with Sterling Heights police during a welfare check earlier in the week. According to a statement from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, the individual was 54-year-old Nicolas Quaranta, a resident of Sterling Heights. The release, issued on December 5, summarized the preliminary findings surrounding the incident.
Authorities reported that officers were sent to check on Quaranta’s well-being after concerns had been raised about his condition. When officers arrived, they encountered him inside the residence holding a handgun. Police noted that he appeared to be experiencing significant emotional distress at the time. Specialized negotiators who are trained to communicate with individuals in crisis spent more than an hour attempting to resolve the situation peacefully.
Despite these efforts, police said the situation escalated when Quaranta raised the weapon toward officers. According to the sheriff’s office, officers acted to protect themselves and others present, resulting in Quaranta being struck by police gunfire. Emergency responders from the fire department immediately provided medical assistance, but he later died from his injuries.
Authorities have released only limited details as the case remains under active review. City Police Lt. Aaron Susalla stated that he could not confirm how many times Quaranta was struck or provide specifics about the injuries, noting that such information is part of the ongoing investigative process. When asked whether any shots were fired toward officers, Susalla declined to comment for the same reason.
The Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office also confirmed that the investigation is still in progress. Dr. Mary Pietrangelo, the county medical examiner, stated that no additional information could be shared at this stage, reinforcing that the case is still being reviewed.
Officials have confirmed that no other individuals were physically harmed during the incident. As part of standard procedures, the investigation into the shooting has been handed over to the sheriff’s office rather than being conducted internally by the Sterling Heights Police Department. This practice is common when police-involved shootings occur, ensuring that an outside agency conducts the review.
In keeping with departmental policy, the officers directly involved in the shooting, along with additional officers who were at the scene, have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Lt. Susalla noted that nine officers have been placed on leave, though he did not provide further detail about how many officers discharged their weapons. He also did not elaborate on the exact location within the property where the shooting occurred or whether police had any previous interactions with Quaranta, saying that such information is part of the broader inquiry.
