Patricia Espinosa, Saint James, Long Island – In a single day, the Nassau County Police Department and a grieving family were left reeling after the loss of an off-duty police officer in a traffic incident that authorities say involved impaired driving. Police identified the officer as Patricia Espinosa, a 42-year-old member of the Nassau County Police Department. According to the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA), Officer Espinosa was the mother of a two-year-old daughter. The crash occurred early Saturday morning, shortly after 6 a.m., at the intersection of Route 347 and Alexander Avenue in Saint James. Authorities said Officer Espinosa was driving her vehicle when it was struck by a pickup truck entering the intersection. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and all individuals involved were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Officer Espinosa was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 20-year-old man from Hauppauge, was taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to Suffolk County police. A passenger traveling with him was also hospitalized. Both were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that all charges are subject to the legal process.
