Randy Johnson Obituary, Death – Three people, including a Wilkes County sheriff’s deputy, died in a tragic crash Friday evening in North Carolina, according to the State Highway Patrol. Two others sustained injuries in the head-on collision, which occurred just after 7 p.m. on Red White and Blue Road near Ruth Linny Road.

Authorities say a 2003 Jeep Liberty, traveling northbound, crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2018 Nissan Altima head-on. The driver of the Jeep, identified as 62-year-old Randy Johnson, died at the scene. Investigators noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Nissan Altima was driven by 34-year-old Johnathan Laws, who was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital. Sadly, he later died from his injuries. Troopers confirmed that Laws served as a deputy with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to Laws, 72-year-old Vickie Key, who was sitting in the backseat of the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two more passengers in the Nissan were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Their identities and conditions have not been released at this time.

Emergency crews from Ronda Fire and Rescue and Broadway Fire and Rescue were among the first responders on scene. They reported finding three victims trapped inside the vehicles upon arrival and worked to free them.

As a result of the crash, Red White and Blue Road was shut down for nearly two hours while authorities investigated. Troopers have stated that early findings do not indicate that speeding or alcohol played a role in the collision.

The crash remains under active investigation, and additional details have not yet been released. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has been contacted for further updates, but no response has been issued as of yet.

The loss of Deputy Johnathan Laws is being felt deeply across the Wilkes County law enforcement and local community. His service and sacrifice have been acknowledged as part of a tragedy that has shaken many.

This incident marks another grim reminder of the dangers on rural roadways, where lane departures can lead to deadly consequences. Though weather and road conditions have not been cited as factors, the investigation will continue to determine exactly what caused the Jeep to veer into oncoming traffic.

At this point, the crash is still considered a developing story. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available from officials.
