The incident took place around 7 p.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and East San Antonio Drive. According to information from the Long Beach Police Department, a 2005 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of a 2018 Jeep Cherokee that was ahead of it.
The impact of the crash caused a chain reaction. The Jeep Cherokee, pushed forward by the force of the collision, veered across a pedestrian sidewalk and hit a fire hydrant before continuing into a nearby parking lot, where it came into contact with a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. Police noted that these secondary collisions were the result of the initial rear-end impact.
When officers arrived, they found the driver of the Nissan Altima still inside his vehicle. Emergency medical crews responded quickly, but Craig was pronounced dead at the scene. No other fatalities were reported.
