Rochelle Lewis Obituary, Death – A tragic domestic violence incident in Haynesville on the night of July 1 has left a woman dead and her husband in critical condition. The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Spring Drive and was first reported by the couple’s two children, ages 13 and 15, who called 911 and told dispatchers, “Daddy had shot mama.”
Haynesville police officers responded to the scene and discovered 48-year-old Rochelle Lewis deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. According to statements from one of the teens, their father, identified as Shamarcus Lewis, entered the home, and soon after, gunfire erupted.
Authorities revealed that at the time of the shooting, Rochelle Lewis had an active restraining order against her husband. The order had been issued in Caddo Parish following a previous domestic violence incident. Both Rochelle and Shamarcus were longtime residents of Haynesville, although they also maintained a residence in the Cross Lake area of Shreveport.
Further investigation showed that Shamarcus Lewis was under legal scrutiny prior to this tragedy. He was wearing an ankle monitor due to a domestic violence charge from November 2024, when he allegedly rammed Rochelle’s vehicle from behind. That case was still active, and Shamarcus was scheduled to appear in court in August.
Following Tuesday night’s shooting, Shamarcus fled the scene before police arrived. A “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert was issued for his vehicle. About 30 to 40 minutes later, police in Minden spotted the car and attempted to stop him. A brief chase ensued before Shamarcus crashed his vehicle.
After the crash, a standoff with police began and lasted roughly 10 minutes. During this time, Shamarcus reportedly shot himself in the head. He was quickly transported to a hospital in Shreveport and remains in critical condition.
Caddo Parish District Attorney James Stewart Sr. expressed condolences to the family of Rochelle Lewis and emphasized the seriousness with which his office treats domestic violence. He highlighted the efforts of the Special Victims Unit, which was created to address such cases more effectively.
In the wake of this incident, the couple’s two teenage children are now staying with relatives. Authorities have not yet commented on potential future charges, pending Shamarcus’s medical condition and ongoing investigation.
This case has drawn renewed attention to the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of enforcement in cases involving protective orders. The incident also raises questions about the effectiveness of monitoring individuals with a history of violence, particularly those with active restraining orders and upcoming court dates.
The Haynesville community has been shaken by this devastating event, which took place in front of the couple’s children. Local officials and support organizations are expected to offer resources and assistance to the affected family members in the coming days.
