Sinay Lopez Obituary, Death – Wichita police have confirmed that the woman who was fatally stabbed during a domestic violence incident in west Wichita on Thursday was the one who initially called 911.
The victim, 27-year-old Sinay Lopez, contacted emergency services around 2:15 p.m. from the 6300 block of West Kellogg to report a domestic disturbance. However, officers said a language barrier during the call made it difficult for dispatchers to fully understand the situation.
After making the call, Lopez left the area but later returned to the apartment, where the fatal attack occurred. Police arrived on the scene around 2:35 p.m., just 20 minutes after the call was placed.
Upon arrival, officers found a woman outside the apartment suffering from what appeared to be a cut or stab wound. She was quickly taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries. Inside the apartment, authorities discovered both Lopez and the suspect. Lopez had sustained multiple stab wounds and was also transported to a nearby hospital, but sadly, she did not survive.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Edward Millan-Volcan, according to booking information from the Sedgwick County Jail. Police say Lopez and Millan-Volcan shared children together, and those children were present in the home during the violent incident.
The second victim, a 25-year-old woman, remains in stable condition as she continues to receive treatment at the hospital. Her identity has not been released.
Following the investigation at the scene, Millan-Volcan was taken into custody and booked on several serious charges. These include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of aggravated child endangerment.
The case is still under investigation, as police work to piece together the full timeline of events and determine what led up to the deadly encounter. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the attack or the nature of the relationship between the second victim and the suspect.
This incident has raised concerns about domestic violence and language access in emergency situations. Officials have acknowledged that the language barrier may have complicated efforts to understand Lopez’s emergency call and respond accordingly. It remains unclear whether additional support, such as translation services, was available during the call.
The tragic death of Sinay Lopez has left the community in mourning, especially those who knew her personally and are now left to care for her children. Wichita police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice in the case and supporting the surviving victims.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Wichita Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
