CHICAGO – A man was killed in a drive-by shooting that took place overnight on Chicago’s South Side, according to police reports. The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 12000 block of South LaSalle Street, located in the West Pullman neighborhood. Chicago police say the victim, described as a man between 20 and 25 years old, was sitting inside a vehicle when another dark-colored SUV pulled up nearby.
An occupant of that SUV reportedly fired multiple shots from inside the vehicle before quickly driving away from the scene. The victim was struck in the head by gunfire. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, and an official identification is still pending. At this time, no suspects are in custody, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Investigators working the case did recover a firearm at the scene. However, police have not stated whether it belonged to the victim or the shooter, or if it was used in the incident.
This shooting was one of two deadly drive-by attacks reported in Chicago during the same night. Just over an hour earlier, around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, another fatal drive-by occurred in the 100 block of West 79th Street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. No further details have been released about that case.
Chicago police are actively investigating both incidents and are appealing to the public for help. They are asking anyone with information related to the South LaSalle Street shooting to contact Area Two Detectives at 312-747-8273. People can also submit tips anonymously by visiting CPDtip.com or by calling 911.
So far, police have not confirmed whether the two shootings are connected in any way. Investigators are reviewing any available surveillance footage and speaking to possible witnesses in hopes of identifying the shooter or learning more about the vehicle involved.
The back-to-back shootings have contributed to rising concerns over gun violence in parts of the city, especially involving drive-by attacks. Officials are urging residents to share any relevant information that may help solve the case and bring those responsible to justice.
As the investigation continues, police say they will provide further updates if new information becomes available. In the meantime, the victim’s death marks yet another grim chapter in the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.
