Authorities have identified a 53-year-old man from the San Francisco Bay Area who passed away following a skiing collision over the weekend at a Lake Tahoe resort.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before noon on Sunday at Northstar California Resort, located in the Truckee area on the north side of Lake Tahoe.

Officials identified the skier as Stuart McLaughlin of Hillsborough in San Mateo County.

In a statement, Northstar described the incident as a serious on-mountain collision involving two guests on the advanced-level Polaris trail. Resort officials said ski patrol responded immediately to provide assistance.

The Northstar Fire Department later responded to the scene. Despite emergency efforts, one of the individuals involved was pronounced deceased, authorities confirmed.

Details regarding the second skier involved in the collision have not been released. Officials have not indicated whether additional injuries were reported.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not provided further information about the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Resort officials expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the incident. They also noted that safety remains a priority and that ski patrol personnel are trained to respond quickly to emergencies on the mountain.

Skiing accidents, while relatively uncommon, can occur even on marked trails, particularly on advanced terrain. Officials encourage guests to remain aware of their surroundings and follow posted safety guidelines while participating in winter sports.
