Ted Czech Obituary, Death – A tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of a police officer and the gunman, according to officials.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m., prompting an immediate emergency response.
Ted Czech, a spokesperson for York County’s Office of Emergency Management, stated that authorities received a 911 call regarding an “active threat” at the hospital. Law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene to contain the situation.
While the identity of the shooter has not yet been released, authorities confirmed that the fallen officer was Andrew Duarte. The West York Borough Police Department shared the news in a Facebook post, expressing their condolences to his family and colleagues.
“Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte’s family and all of our brothers and sisters in the West York Borough Police Department who have lost a comrade and friend, as well as our fellow Borough agencies that have lost a colleague,” the post read. “Our community grieves the loss of a hero.”
Hospital officials confirmed that no patients were harmed during the incident.
Susan Manko, a spokesperson for UPMC Memorial, stated that hospital staff received reports of a gunman and shots fired.
“The gunman has been apprehended, and no patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure,” Manko told Fox News. “This is a fluid situation; law enforcement is on the premises and managing the response. We are grateful to all local law enforcement agencies for their swift action.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the situation on Saturday morning, confirming that he had been briefed and was traveling to the hospital.
“I’ve been briefed on the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County and I am on my way to the scene,” Shapiro wrote on X. “The hospital is now secure, and members of the Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency are on-site, responding alongside local and federal partners.”
Shapiro urged residents to follow law enforcement instructions and avoid the area while authorities continued their investigation.
