Wesley Dancler Obituary, Death – The Mishawaka Police Department has identified the victim of a fatal shooting that took place early Tuesday morning as 17-year-old Wesley Dancler. Officers were dispatched to the Parkview Terrace Apartments on East 12th Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. and found Dancler with a single gunshot wound.
Emergency responders immediately began life-saving efforts, and Dancler was transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead. Following initial investigations, authorities believe the shooting occurred inside an apartment during a gathering of teenagers and adults who were familiar with each other.
According to witness statements, the firearm was discharged accidentally. Investigators determined that a 15-year-old boy was handling the weapon when it went off. The teen suspect was interviewed in the presence of a guardian and subsequently detained at the Juvenile Justice Center in St. Joseph County.
The 15-year-old is currently facing a preliminary charge of reckless homicide. Under Indiana law, this is classified as a Level 5 felony if committed by an adult. Mishawaka Police emphasized that the individuals involved were acquainted with one another, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The case remains under active investigation. Authorities are working closely with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office and Juvenile Probation to review all available evidence and determine if formal charges will be filed.
Earlier reports confirmed that officers had responded to a shooting at the Parkview Terrace Apartment Complex, where they remained on scene for several hours. Police stated that the case is being investigated as a homicide and described the incident as isolated.
Law enforcement is asking anyone with additional information to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Mishawaka Police Department Detective Bureau at 574-258-1684. Anonymous tips can also be shared with Michiana Crime Stoppers by calling 574-288-7867 or 800-342-7867.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, particularly focusing on how the 15-year-old gained access to the firearm and what led to the deadly discharge. The police have not released further details about the weapon involved or the nature of the gathering, but they remain in contact with those present during the incident.
The Mishawaka Police Department is expected to release more information as the investigation progresses. For now, the focus remains on gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and working through the legal process with prosecutors and juvenile justice officials.
The tragic loss of a young life has left the local community shaken. Police urge families to speak with children and teens about gun safety and to ensure firearms are properly secured to prevent future accidents.
