William Martin Batiste, Jr. Obituary, Death – A motorcyclist who died in a crash on South College Drive in Santa Maria has been identified as 55-year-old William Martin Batiste, Jr., according to local police.
The fatal accident occurred around 5:03 p.m. on Friday when Batiste was traveling northbound on his motorcycle. According to investigators, a vehicle exited a private parking lot at 615 East Betteravia Road and attempted to enter College Drive. However, the driver made an illegal turn, directly crossing into Batiste’s path.
Batiste collided with the vehicle, causing him to be ejected from his motorcycle. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Marian Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was identified as 35-year-old Ashley Elise Wallace, also a resident of Santa Maria. Wallace sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the collision.
A preliminary investigation by the Santa Maria Police Department’s Traffic Unit determined that Wallace was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash. As a result, she was arrested for felony DUI (drugs) and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.
The case has now been forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review, with potential additional charges being considered. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, gathering more details to determine the full circumstances of the crash.
