Zavion Larue Dorsey, Wayne Douglas Doerr Obituary, Death – Sacramento authorities have identified two of the three men who died in a shooting that stemmed from an attempted robbery at the Lance Apartments. The Sacramento County Coroner confirmed that 22-year-old Zavion Larue Dorsey of Rancho Cordova and 24-year-old Wayne Douglas Doerr were among the victims. The third victim, also a man in his 20s, has not yet been publicly named. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported that a fourth man was arrested in connection with the incident, though 18-year-old Jaylen Davis is not facing homicide charges.
The violent confrontation unfolded early Sunday morning, around 7 a.m., when the sheriff’s communications center received a call reporting an apartment with visible bullet holes and possible deceased individuals inside. Deputies responding to the Lance Apartments on El Camino Avenue found the three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Guns were discovered next to their bodies, and Davis was detained at the scene.
Following the incident, Sheriff Jim Cooper publicly criticized Mercy Housing, which manages the apartment complex, for delaying the release of surveillance footage crucial to the investigation. Authorities eventually obtained the video via a search warrant, which helped them locate and interview a key witness who corroborated the events leading to the shooting. In a news release, the sheriff’s office noted that the delay in accessing the footage caused investigators to process the scene in a more time-consuming manner than necessary.
Mercy Housing responded, emphasizing their commitment to resident safety and cooperation with law enforcement. They stated that their onsite staff provided the requested surveillance video and other materials. The organization also indicated that it is reviewing its Crisis Response Plan to ensure staff are prepared for urgent situations in the future.
Through the investigation, authorities determined that the shooting originated from a robbery attempt. One of the victims was being robbed by two men when a struggle broke out, resulting in the victim being fatally shot. A fourth man at the complex then fired a weapon, killing both of the robbers. This account was confirmed by the witness identified from the surveillance footage.
Despite the violent nature of the incident, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office consulted with the District Attorney’s Office and decided not to pursue homicide charges at this time. All four men involved had prior felony convictions, which prohibited them from possessing firearms. Davis, who was on active probation and wearing an ankle monitor, was arrested on firearm-related charges and is not eligible for bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
Earlier updates from the sheriff’s office had not disclosed that a suspect had been detained, leading to some inconsistencies in reporting. The Lance Apartments are managed by Mercy Housing, which describes itself as a provider of safe, quality low-income housing and affordable resident services for those in need. The tragic shooting has raised concerns about safety, law enforcement cooperation, and gun violence within the complex.
