Investigators said a 2016 Dodge Journey was traveling southbound on County Road 101. The vehicle was driven by a 61-year-old man from Cass Lake, Minnesota. Officials stated that the SUV came to a stop just before the railroad tracks and then continued forward as a train was approaching the crossing. The vehicle was struck during the attempted crossing.

The driver was identified as Douglas Stewart, 61. His passenger, identified as 42-year-old Tiffany Stewart, was also in the vehicle. Authorities confirmed that both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their relationship was described as that of a married couple.

Law enforcement officials did not release additional details about the train or its operator, and no information was provided regarding injuries to anyone else involved. The focus of the investigation remains on determining the circumstances that led to the collision.
