Authorities in Englewood are continuing to investigate a tragic roadway incident that claimed the life of a 33-year-old bicyclist, while a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred Tuesday night at the intersection of San Casa Drive and 10th Street. Investigators say a van traveling southbound struck a bicyclist who was attempting to cross the roadway. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where the cyclist was pronounced dead.
Officials noted that the direction the bicyclist was traveling remains under review as part of the ongoing investigation. Following the incident, the vehicle involved left the area. Troopers later located the van at a residence on Michigan Avenue, where it was secured as evidence for further examination.
Authorities identified the driver as Christopher Lee Flinn of Englewood. He has been charged in connection with leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality. Law enforcement officials allege the driver did not remain at the location following the collision, as required.
Residents in the area reported hearing unusual sounds around the time of the incident, initially mistaking them for minor roadway disturbances. Some later realized the seriousness of the situation upon closer inspection. Surveillance footage from nearby properties is also being reviewed as part of the investigation.
Neighbors expressed concern about road safety in the area, noting that close calls involving cyclists and vehicles have been a recurring issue. Community members are calling for increased caution from both drivers and cyclists to help prevent future incidents.
The suspect is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail, with bond set at $100,000. Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains active as they continue gathering details surrounding the crash.
